Maybe it’s the lure of trying to achieve something seemingly impossible or the challenge of pushing ourselves to the limit but when it comes to music, sometimes the songs that are the hardest to sing also tend to be our favorites.
Whether you’re looking to impress your fellow friends at a karaoke bar or looking to become a better singer, songs with complex melodies, arrangements, intervals, and notes can be quite fun to perform. That said, here are our picks for some of the most challenging songs out there.
“Lovin’ You” by Minnie Riperton
Those among us who are not familiar with the intricacies of singing and performing might not appreciate this song’s challenge factor but rest assured, this one’s pretty demanding. Apart from the challenge of singing its high notes and whistle notes in a quiet way, “Lovin’ You” will also challenge your lungs and breathing with its complex delivery.
Despite this, Riperton manages to make this song seem effortless, and if we’re being honest, only she could have achieved this feat. If you’re ever in the mood to sing this one, be warned—the last walk-down of this song features notes that range all the way from an F#6 to an A5. Jeez.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen
When it comes to rock royalty, bands like Queen are still considered to be somewhere at the top. While many of the band’s popular songs are fun and relatively easy to sing, their legendary album “A Night At The Opera” took a slightly different route.
Given its name, most of the songs in this album featured complex melodies and musical arrangements, and nowhere is this more evident than “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Transitioning from classing rock to a power ballad to something you would hear at the opera, this song is pretty toilsome, to say the least.
“Emotions” by Mariah Carey
While it can be argued that songs like “Chandelier” from Sia and Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song” also deserve a place on this list, at the end of the day, it is Mariah Carey’s “Emotions” that takes the cake.
The pop queen has made a name for herself as someone who does not shy away from challenging songs featuring incredible high notes. From songs like “Bliss” and “Forever” to “Vision of Love,” although we could come up with an entire list of songs from Carey that are incredibly strenuous, “Emotions” will forever be atop that list.
