Real Or Fake: Perfectly Timed Photos That Will Make You Scratch Your Head

Heather Jackson

Who Let This Dog Out?

This site is shocking but is still adorable, no doubt! It seems that something awesome caught this large canine's attention, hence, its curious reaction. Despite their massive size, mastiffs are generally calm and yet powerful breeds, which makes them excellent guard dogs.

The biggest mastiff ever recorded was Zorba in November 1989. It stood 37 inches high, measured over eight feet long from its nose to the tail, and weighed over 340 pounds. Still, owners get to enjoy a longer puppyhood with this breed, but just a word of caution: the babies need supervision because they are prone to injuries.

Boop!

Poor guy—because he had no idea he would become a meme overnight. Still, this reminds us of the painting of God reaching his finger to Adam in the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo created this masterpiece, but he initially did not want to do it because he thought of himself as a sculptor and not really a painter.

According to History, the celebrated artist did his art while standing, contrary to the common misconception that he was lying down. Michelangelo and his assistants put his designed wooden scaffolds and platforms together and attached them to walls to help him reach the ceiling.

Kamehameha Wave

Former President Barack Obama did a lot of great things when he was in office. In his six years, he cut the unemployment rate from 10 percent to 4.7 percent, became an ally to the LGBTQ community by fighting for marriage equality, and signed the Affordable Care Act, which benefits 20 million people in the country.

There is no doubt that Obama, the first African-American president of the United States, has done a fantastic job leading the nation. Does he have superpowers? Because this snapshot of a journalist seems to tell us that he probably can do Goku's Kamehameha Wave.

A Painful Encounter With A Ball

Although this action shot was perfectly timed, we can't imagine how painful it must have been for this man. He probably didn't have good reflexes to catch the ball, which we can assume to be flying so fast, or he simply didn't have enough time to react.

The truth is, photographer Jim McIsaac caught this hilarious scene of the basketball hitting  Washington Wizards coach Randy Wittman's face in 2013 during the team's game against the Brooklyn Nets. As expected, it launched a barrage of memes and circulated the internet, with some showing pity for the official while others poked fun at his seeming lack of reflex.

Nobody Can See Her

We are in awe of how dedicated photographer Wilma Hurskainen, who graduated from the University of Art and Design/Aalto University in Helsinki, and her team were when they executed this shot because it is not easy to find clothes to match a scene. Moreover, it was even harder to get the perfect timing because the waves are unpredictable!

Hurskainen's series is called "Meditations," which focuses on the themes of imitation and hiding, as seen in this snap. The photographer's work also depicts her meditative practice of being one with nature. Well, we wouldn't have noticed this was an optical illusion if it weren't for the subject's hair!

Just Keep Swimming

Ever seen a creature that's half-man and half-fish? Of course, we are familiar with merfolks: mermaids and mermen. These mythical beings have the upper bodies of a human but the lower extremities of fish. According to ThoughtCo, this concept came from the story of Atargatis, who transformed after feeling shameful for killing her lover.

These days, a lot of people understand that these are fictional characters that inspired countless works of art like "Aquamarine," "Luca," "The Shape of Water," and "The Little Mermaid." However, explorer Christopher Columbus swore that he saw them while he was on his voyage in the sea.

Hitchhiking Via Air

Aww! Did the woodpecker and weasel form an unlikely bond when the bird allowed the other animal to hop on its back for a free ride? It is fascinating how the tiny mammal seemed to cling to the flying organism like a baby.

However, this may not be as touching as we imagined it to be. According to National Geographic, this could have been a result of a failed predatory attack. Shot by Martin Le-May for the BBC, he somehow distracted the weasel when the woodpecker landed. However, because the bird is a forager of ants, it is vulnerable to predators.

Got Your Nose!

There's nothing wrong with picking one's nose because everyone does it! Still, when done in public, people often criticize the act as if this was something taboo. However, this basketball game shot was accidental but would have us cringing!

According to Medical News Today, an old study showed that 91 percent of respondents pick their noses, and 75 percent said they do so because almost all people do it. We do this for many reasons, but mainly to remove boogers, which are the collected dust, pollen, and other things. This can be irritating to the nose, so we remove the blockage.

Perfect Headless Stunt

This may come off a little strange to onlookers because the head seems missing but upon closer inspection, we can't help but be in awe of how flexible this gymnast was in performing this stunt. This picture is obviously the right blend of timing and perspective.

According to Nimble Sports, young men in Ancient Greece used to do gymnastics to prepare for war. Back then, women weren't allowed to compete in this field, but it wasn't until the '20s that they were given the green light. These days, girls can join the Olympics' uneven bars, balance beam, floor, and horse routines.

What's The Good News?

The beach is a great place to relax while getting a tan. Plus, this is also a nice spot to be updated on current events, just like this man. Unbeknownst to him, he invited a curious bird, which seemed to be reading as well.

Pigeons are called "rats with wings" because of their antics but back during World Wars I and II, they were helpful because they served as messengers and they helped save lives due to the critical information they delivered. In fact, one bird named Cher Ami aided in the rescue of nearly 200 American soldiers in 1918.

Lunch's Ready!

This action shot had us questioning its authenticity, but we best believe that this epic moment was captured on the lens by photographer Stephane Ducandas. On top of the composition, we were in awe of how he took this picture at the perfect time!

Taken in Loyalty Islands Province in New Caledonia, fishermen from the area use their skills to spear their meals on the clear waters. This man named Albert was a pro at using his tool, and Ducandas admitted he was amazed at the person's precision, too! On top of this, we love how clear the ocean was in this spot.

Birds Are Friends, Bruce

People with galeophobia, or an irrational fear of sharks, will struggle to look at this picture for more than a split second. The massive size of this beast should have been more than enough to scare the bird away, but the poor creature had no idea of what was coming.

Despite this creature's massive size, sharks are elasmobranchs, which means they do not have bones and only cartilaginous skeletons with the same texture as our ears. Still, they have good eyesight and can see color, which is probably how this aquatic animal saw such a small animal on the water's surface.

Too Early For This!

We're sure many people don't like to wake up early. However, science has found that being a morning person or a night owl is inborn. According to Vox, between 30 and 50 percent of people fall in the middle of the chronotypes, meaning they prefer to sleep between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., but everyone has their preferences.

The guy yawning is probably an evening person and wasn't into doing many things in the morning. Obviously, he knew what he signed up for because he still pulled enough courage and willpower to at least get up and show up.

Black And White Vs. Technicolor

This perfectly timed shot had us double thinking, which is the real subject? This magnificent aircraft aside, Christ the Redeemer, is undeniably one of Brazil's most recognizable sites, primarily because it is one of the enormous statues in the world.

It was included on the list of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, and there's no doubt about its magnificence because it took nine years for the completion of the construction, which cost $250K at the time. In fact, it is such an important addition to Rio de Janeiro that the prices of apartments with this view skyrocketed!

Gentle Giant Caught On Cam

Swimming with sea creatures is not unusual; we do it with fish and other organisms beneath the surface. However, cameraman Marco Queral got an unparalleled chance to be so close to a humpback whale, so much so that he got a free ride!

This photo also shows us a great comparison of a human's size to this beautiful beast. According to Oceana, humpback whales can grow up to 50 feet, and despite this massive size, they are not considered predatory. Although there have been reports of accidental collisions, they are considered harmless to people, so we're not really surprised that Queral can be this close.

Magical Touch

This perfectly timed image seems to be of something magical happening when it is just a bubble popping. Taken by Richard Heeks, this is an excellent reminder of how we consistently fail to see how magical-looking this mundane activity is and given how fast this can take place, the photographer worked his skills to capture such a beautiful moment.

Bubbles display iridescence because of the reflection of the interaction of light on the back and front of the soap bubble. While we see this almost every day, we fail to appreciate its beauty because we are often busy with our mundane tasks.

Who's A Good Boy?

Photographer Christian Vieler's photo series of pets catching treats will certainly brighten up people's days. After all, it is hard not to smile upon seeing this dog seemingly so eager to get his snack from the person behind the lens. To make it better, some of the snapshots show animals that miss catching their food, resulting in hilarious expressions.

Truthfully, treats are more than just a snack and are powerful in training canines. However, it is worth noting that this tasty food should not be given to dogs all the time because this may cause health problems in the long run.

Additional Olympic Rings

Reuters' Luke MacGregor appears to have created an alternate logo for the Olympics—this time with six rings, thanks to the perfect placement of the moon, which seems to be the same size as the other rings. The five rings represent Asia, America, Europe, Africa, and Oceania.

The colors were chosen because the nations mentioned have at least one of these hues on their flags. Plus, the logo was based on the design of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, which was first presented in 1913. Since its inception, Prestige Online notes that the tournament had never been postponed until the 2020 Tokyo event.

Duck Flamingos

This aerial shot seems to be of pink, crumpled papers carefully positioned to resemble a duck on a pond. Ironically, these were flamingos that weren't coaxed to form this shape; perhaps, they thought of posing for the camera.

Many kids love flamingos because they look so elegant with their long legs and pink feathers, which also gives justice to their group name: flamboyance. Interestingly, they get their signature coral color from the food they eat. According to Smithsonian's National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute, these creatures eat brine shrimp, which consume algae with carotenoids, the same component that gives carrots their hue.

Neil Armstrong Reborn

By the looks of it, this snowboarder had no idea that from afar, he seemed to be stepping on the moon. Luckily, a creative eye saw this opportunity and snapped the moment, giving us the genius of images snapped at the right time and perspective.

But when we talk about the moon, we learn in school that Neil Armstrong was the first to land. However, he wasn't the only one. In July 1969, he, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, and several others successfully reached this celestial body. Others who also achieved the same feat include Charles Duke, Harrison Schmitt, and David Scott.

Eye To Eye

It is not every day that we see inanimate objects forming an optical illusion, so kudos to this photographer for capturing this rock formation and the moon looking like an eye. But upon deeper analysis, we can see that this resembles the Evil Eye, which former actress Meghan Markle was seen wearing as an accessory.

It is called "mati" in Greek and has been seen as an amulet for protection. This concept is widely believed in West Asia and the Mediterranean. According to Town and Country, the stare is meant to bring bad luck to the person it is directed to.

Titanic Boss

Some readers may have been anxious at the sight of this man on a sinking boat. What's more, we couldn't help but ask what this guy was thinking with his fine suit in the waters. Because the waves are unpredictable, it is safe to say that the photographer needed to be quick in capturing this decisive moment.

Regarding boat races and Hugo Boss, British athlete Alex Thomson has become synonymous. While his career was at its peak, he announced in 2021 that he would take a break from the business to spend more time with his family, underlining how his wife Kate single-handedly raised their children.

Someone's Hungry

It must have been surreal to see this beast catching its dinner in action, but it is probably a familiar sight for wildlife photographer Eli Martinez, who has been working on the scene for many years.

People often confuse alligators and crocodiles, but there are key differences. According to AZ Animals, the former has a rounded, U-shaped snout and webbed feet and is generally timid, while the latter has a triangular, V-shaped snout and is seen as aggressive. Despite the difference in behaviors, don't take this as a sign to go near these giant lizards because they are not meant to be approached.

Moon On A Silver Platter

Dubai is one of the world's wealthiest countries, so there's no doubt that almost everything is luxurious in the area, including the prestigious Burj Al Arab, helmed by architect Tom Wright. Although some argue that France's Eiffel Tower is a great contender to this tower, the Middle Eastern structure is actually 45 feet taller than the European tourist site.

The accommodation is far more glorious than one could ever imagine. For one, guests are entitled to 17 different kinds of pillows while the rooms' duvets were made from nests in Iceland—who would have thought that bedding could be this luxurious?

Here Comes The Plane

When we were kids, our parents tried to fool us into eating vegetables and other healthy food by doing the "Here-comes-the-plane" antics. This image seems to show a statue reaching for an aircraft.

Travel and Leisure note that most commercial airplanes fly between 33,000 and 42,000 feet in the lower stratosphere. This area is beneficial for airline companies because this saves them money on fuel. Flying at that height, aircraft can glide easily because the thin air provides more fuel efficiency. Plus, these vehicles also require oxygen for the engines, so staying in this spot helps them run smoothly.

A Whole New Beach World

No, it's not the magic carpet or the new hoverboard we've all wanted since watching "Back to The Future." It's just our eyes creating this illusion that the woman is on a floating plank because of the placement of a flag's shadow.

The flag of Europe, as seen on the top left part of the photo, symbolizes the whole Council of Europe and was designed in 1955. Later on, it also became the representation of the European Union. There are 12 stars on the flag that stand for the continent's people. It has been said that 12 depicts entirety and perfection.

Toned Cat

Abercombie & Fitch's model seems to have a little more fur than we're used to. This perfectly angled picture may give you a weird feeling about combining cuteness with brawn. Either way, it is funny seeing a large-eyed kitten sporting abs and low-waist white pants.

Pet owners may find this habit of crawling into bags funny, but there's an explanation behind this funny behavior. Cats like boxes and paper bags due to their instinct. A University of Utrecht study showed that they find comfort in closed spaces after an experiment found that the stress levels of shelter felines given boxes significantly reduced.

A Kick To Start The Day

Being a sales staff member in a clothing store requires a lot of patience and determination because it takes hard work to attend to customers with different attitudes and fix the pieces on the shelves. It could be even more challenging if the mannequins moved and gave the personnel a hard time changing their clothes.

This is probably why some people develop pediophobia or fear of dolls and mannequins. However, according to Mannequin Mall, these could also be used as therapy tools where owners could dress them and design them as they please. This also cultivates their freedom to express themselves.

Whose Legs Are Those?

We can't blame our readers if they had difficulty knowing whose legs those are—is it the woman wearing a black top or the girl in a floral top? Either way, their poses didn't help because they made this optical illusion look more convincing.

We can assume that the woman in the middle joined a local pageant. Speaking of which, the world has been obsessed with this type of competition since ancient times. According to PBS, the first beauty contest was believed to have been rooted in the legend about Alexandros, who was called to settle who the fairest was among Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite.

Have Pity, Sir!

Poor bird! Luckily, this was just a statue of Ilmarinen, a god also known as the Eternal Hammerer. Coming from Finnish mythology, this blacksmith is believed to have the ability to do anything, specifically with gold, brass, silver, iron, and copper, but unfortunately, he wasn't lucky with love.

This is the statue of the god found at the Old Student House in Helsinki. The character is so popular in Finland that it inspired the metal band Amorphis to conceptualize their 2009 album "Skyforger" around the story. Then, the group Turisas also released the song "Cursed Be Iron" about the blacksmith.

The Most Graceful Ballerina

This shot is all about perspectives because this woman looked like a ballerina with her "natural" skirt. So props to the photographer for capturing such a striking moment with a tulip and a subject.

According to Country Living, tulips come in 300 varieties and 150 species in different colors. However, different hues symbolize varying things: white means apology, purple means loyalty, and red means love. It is not as common as a rose because this flower is mostly found in central Asia and the Netherlands. It used to cost so much, around ten times of an average worker in the 1600s.

Meow You See Me

This cat looks like it got so excited that it peered into the food bag. By luck, it is as if it was looking at its owner through the plastic. We're pretty sure that pet owners would find this photo hilarious!

Purina notes that about 18 percent of UK households have cats, but we still have a lot to know about this animal. For one, kitties spend 70 percent of their time snoozing, so there's a good chance that a pet isn't lazy just because they spend their day in bed. Still, they are considered the ruler of the house!

Super Eagle Jet

Photographer Pam Mullins did a great job of capturing this eagle soaring high, as if it left a trail when in fact it was from a passing jet. Still, this bird with its wings open wide never ceases to amaze onlookers with how majestic it is.

Although these creatures have huge wing spans, their grip is more impressive. According to Chipper Birds, their grip is ten times more powerful than ours, so it is safe to say that we shouldn't fight with them. Still, these creatures are seen as a symbol of peace and freedom and are mostly associated with the United States.

A Case Of Bat-Tery?

Ouch! Bat-throwing in the crowd has produced some of the most hilarious photos. While many fans on the bench waited patiently to catch a once-in-a-lifetime item of memorabilia, this guy did not seem ready and was hit in the face!

The reality is that this wasn't really an intentional throw, but an accident after Indiana catcher Kelly Shoppach's bat slipped out to the crowd in Arlington, Texas. As a result, the man in green reportedly suffered a broken rib. From this snap, it would seem that the victim had a broken mandible, but strangely enough, he had a different injury.

Catching The Moon

Taken by Bruno Gerber in Bern, Switzerland, it probably took a while to chance upon the moon and the crane in the perfect position. This reminds us of the crane games in arcades where players try their luck to get stuffed toys or other prizes in the machine through robot fingers.

Anyone who has tried this game would know that it is difficult to get a prize, and that's because these machines are rigged—or so the Smithsonian Magazine claimed. It explained that the claws are randomly strong at times so that some players are able to win while many others don't.

Two Heads Are Better Than One?

What kind of sorcery is this? The Olympics produces some of the most viral shots because action pictures such as this don't offer context. As much as this move is baffling to non-figure skaters, we are in awe of how skilled these two were in performing.

They were likely doing the death spiral move done by pairs. When we talk about this sport, there are a handful of figure skaters that made a mark in history. Korean Yuna Kim, who impressively aced triple toe loops and triple lutz during the 2010 Olympic Games, earned her world records for these stunts.

Teach A Bear To Fish

OK, so humans really don't need to teach bears how to hunt fish because they are even better than us. They are skilled at going to bodies of water to source their food while moms teach their cubs how to do this, just like what we can see in this picture.

Hunting is a very important tool for survival. Bears, specifically grizzly and black, can go for over three months without food, especially during winter when they hibernate. This is thanks to the fat that they stored during summer and fall when they would gobble up as much as possible.

The Trumpets Go …

In perfect timing and angling, this shot created an illusion of a trumpet blowing off smoke. This is the Monument de Samuel de Champlain in Quebec, Canada, made by Paul-Romain Chevre, or Hamilton MacCarthy in some sources, to celebrate Quebec's founder. This is erected on Dufferin Terrace, the very spot where Champlain made his solar watching in 1615.

He was a mapmaker and astrologer talented enough to voyage and explore. However, the sculptor wasn't because, in this monument, the statue holds an old navigational instrument upside down! These days, the area has been a location to see street dancers and performers.

Who Is The Real Subject?

At first glance, there is nothing wrong with a man posing for a remembrance of this scenic place. However, the photobomber may be enough to get people's attention more than the actual subject. We don't know what exactly happened, but the good news is that he was wearing a helmet during the accident.

In the United States alone, almost 1,000 bicyclists meet their demise yearly due to vehicle-related accidents. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this, along with injuries, amounts to $23 billion in this country, so there's no reason not to wear protective gear and helmets.

Got Your Ice Cream

Anyone who has been victimized by a seagull at the beach would know how frustrating it is for food to be stolen. This man clearly felt bad after a bird snatched his ice cream on a presumably hot day, but we can't help but be impressed by the photographer's ability to capture such an epic moment.

According to Delishably, seagulls are kleptoparasites, which means they really do steal other species' food, as well as predators and scavengers. They have also adapted to urban living among us humans, so they mostly get their meals from unsuspecting walkers, which is why there are many reports about these incidents.

Not So Leaning Anymore

Could this picture get any more touristy? People who have gone to this favorite attraction have tried to create an illusion of pushing the structure to make it look straight, but in reality and without perspective, this is how they all look!

However, it wasn't constructed to lean. Its name, "Pisa," came from a Greek word that means "marshy land," which explains why this structure became unstable. The architects failed to account for the subsoil to hold the bell tower when they created a heavy foundation. They only noticed it was starting to sink on one side when they added the second story.

Everyone Looks Weird When Diving

No matter how good an athlete is; they would likely produce ridiculous-looking snaps during diving during competitions. This happened to Qin Kai at the FINA World Championships in 2011. He looks like he was punched in the face, but this was captured mid-air.

Even though this may seem hilarious, Kai is a very talented sportsman who was declared one of the Top Ten Athletes in Shanxi province. Six years later, he won gold in men's 3m synchronized springboard during the Olympics. This may be because he has been training as a gymnast since he was four before taking on diving when he was eight.

Angel On Earth

There are many angels among us, namely good samaritans that spread random acts of kindness, just like this firefighter whose wings perfectly matched his uniform. Their clothing is made to withstand the extreme heat of up to 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit.

Their uniforms also protect service members from alkalis and acids, so we can just imagine how thick these are. According to BrightSide, these weigh anywhere between 11 and 66 pounds, depending on the material used, which is probably why these people need to be fit enough to carry this weight on top of themselves. As for firefighters, mustaches and piercings aren't allowed.

A Chilling Free Fall

One look at this snap, and it's enough to fool us that this was just a stunt. However, this photo by Richard Drew is one of the most famous pictures from the 9/11 attacks. A man fell to his death after he jumped from the World Trade Center out of desperation because he was searching for an escape from the smoke.

This image was so disturbing that newspapers had to pull them out due to the request of readers. It was said that there had been many attempts to identify the victim, but nobody could tell who he was.
